Over the weekend, a group of Penn State students and alumni volunteered at the Monastery Community Gardens. The group helped with a variety of tasks to support the upkeep and productivity of the space.
Volunteers worked in the garden tunnels, where they weeded and maintained the plants. They also harvested vegetables and prepared them for distribution to the local community. In addition, the team mowed the grass, cleared weeds, and helped with general maintenance around the grounds.
The Monastery Community Gardens regularly relies on volunteer support to maintain operations. This visit from Penn State volunteers contributed to the ongoing efforts to provide fresh produce and a well-kept space for all who use the garden.
Organizers noted that the extra help was especially appreciated during the busy summer growing season, when there is a high demand for harvesting and maintenance work. The volunteers completed all scheduled tasks, improving the overall condition of the garden.
Volunteering also provided an opportunity for the group to engage with the community and learn more about sustainable gardening practices. The Monastery Community Gardens plan to continue hosting volunteer days in the future to support ongoing garden projects.
The weekend’s work helped ensure the garden remains a valuable resource for the local area, promoting fresh food access and community involvement. Volunteers expressed satisfaction in contributing their time and effort to the project.
